Citizens Advice Wokingham is a local charity that helps people find a way forward with their problems. We provide a service to anyone who lives or works in Wokingham Borough and have offices in Wokingham and Woodley plus a Mobile Advice Unit to improve the access to advice for people who need it.

Last year we helped nearly 5000 people who live in Wokingham Borough.

Almost all the work we do is delivered by volunteers with a small team of management and staff supported by a Board of Trustees who are also volunteers.

We are currently seeking new Trustees to join our friendly Board and help us shape the future of our charity.

The role of a Trustee;

The Trustee Board’s role is to make the high-level decisions about the organisation to guide and support our mission. Trustees have a collective responsibility to ensure that we spend our income wisely and deliver the best possible service to the people of Wokingham Borough

Trustees set our strategic direction and, with our team, to deliver the business plan to ensure we continue to meet the evolving needs of our clients. Trustees ensure that we are legally compliant, that risks are managed and that our service is as efficient and effective as possible.

Each Trustee will take the lead responsibility on a particular subject area but the Board as a whole takes collective responsibility so you are never on your own. We have a well-established governance structure to ensure decisions are taken at the right level and at the right time.

This is a role for someone who would like to get really involved; someone curious and committed to being a hands-on member of the team. We all visit the office regularly so that we really understand what is happening at the front line of the service.

The skills needed;

There are several skill areas that we are seeking, including;

Social media, communications and marketing skills
Experience of being a Company Secretary and taking responsibility for maintaining accurate statutory records and registers of Trustees
Fundraising and business development

But we are open to hear from anyone with experience that might add value to our Board. Support and training are available from other Trustees and from National Citizens Advice.

The time commitment;

Attending four Board meetings each year plus an annual strategy day and the AGM. You’ll need to read papers in advance to prepare for these meetings.
All Trustees also join one of three small subcommittees of Trustees which meets four times a year ahead of each Board meeting and reviews issues in more detail. (Some of these can be done virtually)
There is some training which everyone in our organisation has to complete. This is relatively straightforward and can be done online but it is mandatory

Our volunteers come from a range of backgrounds and we particularly welcome applications from people with physical or mental health conditions, and people from Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.
