At Berkshire Vision we provide vital practical and friendly support, sport and activities to visually impaired children, adults and their families in Berkshire. Helping them to develop confidence and live independent lives safely.

What will I be doing?

As a volunteer Tech Buddy you will be helping visually impaired members of Berkshire Vision if they have an issue using technology such as a smartphone, tablet, or virtual assistance device. Our Equipment Team will pass Members’ requests for support on to you.In the first instance, you will try to help the member remotely over the phone. Sometimes, Volunteers visit the Member’s home. You will always be free to choose whether you would like to do the home visit or not. Your role may involve installing apps or software on Members’ devices, such as software to help them to manage their household matters online more easily. Tech Buddies are also invited to help at our monthly tech hubs.

Who would be supporting me?

Our Equipment Officer will be your main point of contact once you start your role. The Head of Volunteering and the Volunteering Co-Ordinator will support you as well.
You will receive an online induction, Tech Buddy training and a volunteer handbook. If you incur costs for travel, you will be reimbursed.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for people who know their way around most devices, and who are patient and flexible enough to guide someone else. Importantly, the person you are assisting will be visually impaired. No prior knowledge of sight loss is required as you will be offered training before commencing your role. It would be useful if you have experience with settings/software to make devices accessible for visually impaired users, or you are willing to learn new things. Please note that applicants for this position need to be aged 18 or over. Our application procedure consists of an application form, 2 references, and an Enhanced and Barring List Disclosure Check.

Time Commitment

Flexible but average 2-3 hours per week.
